Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors

Adrian Goldsworthy’s book, Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors, is a triumph of historical scholarship. Goldsworthy, whose epic work, Ceasar, remains today one of the most-read works of ancient historical scholarship in the last two decades. Philip and Alexander is every part its equal. Goldsworthy once again here blends impeccable research with a narrative style that is both engaging and easily understandable - even to the history novice.

Goldsworthy’s book brings a new approach to an old subject. I could not even tell you how many books about Alexander the Great there are. (I stopped scrolling on Amazon after about ten minutes and had not hit the end.) But Goldsworthy addresses how Philip truly made Alexander and created the Macedonia that Alexander would lead into Persia. What is more, Goldsworthy (unlike just about anyone else in the field) actually discusses Alexander’s role BEFORE the Persian invasion.

A fantastic work of scholarship and must-have for any fan of ancient history.
