Hitler’s American Gamble
I love learning something new. Especially, when that something is part of a history that I have been taught since I can remember. Every American knows the words, Pearl Harbor. Most Americans, if asked to list a war, name World War Two number one or two. American students are (sometimes… okay many times) taught from elementary school through high school that American won World War Two. And most Americans probably assume that the United States declared war on Nazi Germany at the same time it declared war on Japan. What would surprise many Americans would be to learn that, believe it or not, the United States NEVER declared war on Nazi Germany.
But if you read Hitler’s American Gamble by Brendan Simms and Charlie Laderman you will learn the fascinating true story about America’s entrance into World War Two. This is truly page-turning history. The book gives an important overview of the events leading up to December 6/7, 1941, and then goes on a rollercoaster ride over the 72 hours that changed world history. Crucially, the book gives you several points of view: German, Russian, British, Japanese, and American. You get the perspective from London and then Berlin, Tokyo and then Washington DC, Rome and Moscow. In other words, you get the WHOLE story.
